What makes a good mentor? Exploring three key attributes and why they matter

Are you on the hunt for a mentor but you are not sure where to start? Picking the right mentor is like assembling your dream team, and we’re here to decode the must-have qualities.

Mentorship is a powerful commitment, requiring a unique set of qualities to communicate ideas and guiding people to their desired outcomes. Through our mentorship experience, we refined these three attributes as game-changer characteristics that define a good mentor.

1. Asking the Right Questions

A good Mentor asks the right questions. It honours the mentee’s inner voice, personal values and aspirations. They recognise that anything is relative and each person holds a different perspective. Also, they recognise that each person holds a different level of perception for every topic. They describe their concept based on the level of perception of each individual. For example, they would not introduce someone to complex principles of Einstein or de Broglie to someone who is unaware of Newton’s mechanics. It is essential for the Mentor to use language that the Mentee can understand and introduce the Mentee to concepts they did not came across in simplistic ways.

2. Doing the Inner Work

Mentorship necessitates intentional choices and personal inner work. It is a game-changing attribute for a Mentor to embody the theories they adhere to, if applicable to them. This does not imply that a Mentor is a flawless or a constantly balanced person; instead, it suggests that attaining the desired outcome, and ideally embodying its principles, empowers individuals to embrace their vision using similar methodologies.

3. Establishing Clear Expectations for Desired Outcomes

It is crucial for the Mentor to honestly establish clear expectations for desired outcomes. The Mentor should consider the entirety of the mentee’s aspirations. They need to pose questions to assist individuals in making intentional choices regarding their aspirations, and, if chosen by the mentee, support them in letting go of certain aspects when it aligns with their goals.

In conclusion, it is through the embodiment of these three qualities that mentors not only shape careers but inspire and elevate individuals towards their fullest potential. The impact of such mentorship extends beyond professional realms, shaping individuals into empowered and enlightened contributors to their fields. A good mentor could possibly be a business bestie navigating you through the business journey with love and honouring your inner compass, values and aspirations.
